Day-by-Day Itinerary

Sunday, Dec 27 — Arrival + Resort Landing

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
Morning / MiddayFly to Kona International Airport (KOA)Flight details not yet captured. KOA → Hilton Waikoloa is usually ~25–35 min by car.TBD⚪ Flight info needed
AfternoonPick up rental car(s), drive to Hilton Waikoloa VillageCheck-in starts 4:00 PM. If rooms are not ready, use bell storage and resort facilities.Rental TBD; parking $48/night self or $55/night valet⚪ Rental car needed
Late AfternoonEasy lagoon / pool / unpackKeep arrival day low-friction. Let kids burn energy without driving again.Included / resort incidentals🟡 Proposed
EveningCasual dinner at resort or Waikoloa areaBest to avoid long drive after travel day. Options: resort dining, Queens’ Marketplace, Lava Lava Beach Club if available.~$150–$350 family depending venue🟡 Proposed

Why this works: Arrival days with kids and a group should not carry a destination dinner or excursion. The resort is the feature today.

Backup: If arrival is early and energy is good, do a short Waikoloa Beach / Anaehoʻomalu Bay sunset walk instead of driving to Kona.

Monday, Dec 28 — Hapuna / Mauna Kea Beach + Manta Dinner

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
MorningHapuna Beach or Mauna Kea BeachHilton → Hapuna ~15 min; Hilton → Mauna Kea Beach ~20 min. Arrive early for parking. Check winter surf flags.Parking/incidentals🟡 Proposed
LunchCasual beach/resort lunchKeep flexible depending beach conditions.~$100–$250 family🟡 Proposed
AfternoonPool / lagoon reset at HiltonProtect the evening dinner and avoid overtired kids.Included🟡 Proposed
EveningManta Restaurant at Mauna Kea Beach HotelTarget 5:30–6:30 PM for kids + sunset/open-air setting. Hilton → Mauna Kea ~20 min.~$300–$600+ family depending group/order🔴 To book

Why this works: Strong first full day: beautiful beach in the morning, rest in the afternoon, polished dinner nearby. It feels special without being logistically heavy.

Dining target: Manta Restaurant, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Reservation path: Mauna Kea Resort dining / OpenTable if available; request outdoor/open-air seating and note large family group. Backup: CanoeHouse at Mauna Lani for a higher-end dinner, or Merriman’s Waimea if willing to drive ~35–40 min each way.

Tuesday, Dec 29 — Volcanoes National Park Expedition

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
7:00 AMDepart HiltonHilton → Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is ~2 hr 15 min to 2 hr 30 min each way depending route/stops. Pack snacks, water, layers, rain jackets.Fuel/parking/park entry🟡 Proposed
Late MorningKīlauea Visitor Center, overlooks, Steam VentsStart with ranger/current conditions. Keep hikes short and flexible.Park entry🟡 Proposed
MiddayThurston Lava Tube + easy trail segmentKid-friendly, memorable, not overly strenuous.Included with park entry🟡 Proposed
LunchVolcano House / packed lunch / nearby Volcano VillageReservations or backup food plan recommended because holiday week.~$100–$250 family🟡 Proposed
AfternoonDevastation Trail or Chain of Craters partial drive if energy allowsDo not overcommit; return drive is long.IncludedOptional
ReturnOptional Punaluʻu Bake Shop stop if routing southAdds time; only if group has energy.~$25–$75Optional
EveningEasy resort dinnerNo ambitious dinner after 5+ hours in the car.~$150–$300 family🟡 Proposed

Why this works: Volcanoes is worth doing once, but it is a true full-day operation from Waikoloa. This day should be treated like the big sightseeing push of the trip.

Risk flag: This is the highest fatigue day. Do not schedule a late dinner, manta snorkel, or early excursion the next morning.

Backup if weather/energy is poor: Replace with Waimea + ranch/upcountry day, Queens’ Marketplace, resort pools, and a nicer dinner.

Wednesday, Dec 30 — Kona / Snorkel Day

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
MorningSlow start after volcano daySleep in, breakfast, resort time.Included / breakfast cost🟡 Proposed
Late MorningDrive to Kona / pick up snorkel gearHilton → Kailua-Kona ~35–45 min. Snorkel Bob’s or similar weekly rental; prescription masks if needed.~$100–$250 depending group gear🟡 To arrange
LunchUmeke’s Fish Market & BarGood poke/fish option; casual and kid-compatible.~$100–$220 family🟡 Proposed
AfternoonKahaluʻu Beach Park snorkelingKona → Kahaluʻu ~15 min. Protected cove, beginner-friendly, turtle possibility. Check reef-safe sunscreen and conditions.Parking/gear🟡 Proposed
EveningHuggo’s / On the Rocks / Kona casual dinnerUse only if group wants a Kona evening; otherwise return to Hilton before dark.~$150–$350 familyOptional

Why this works: This keeps the day flexible after the long volcano push and gives the kids a high-probability snorkeling win.

Backup: If surf or parking is bad at Kahaluʻu, return to Hilton lagoon/pool or use Anaehoʻomalu Bay for a lower-key beach afternoon.

Thursday, Dec 31 — NYE + Manta Ray Night Snorkel

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
MorningResort morning or farmers marketKeep light. Options: Kona Farmers Market or resort/pool. Note: Kelly Birthday on calendar.Flexible🟡 Proposed
AfternoonRest / early dinner / prepare for snorkelCritical to keep kids rested before night water activity.Dinner/snacks🟡 Proposed
EveningManta Ray Night Snorkel — Keauhou BayHilton → Keauhou Bay ~50–60 min each way. Tours often around sunset/evening; exact time TBD by operator. Bring warm layers/towels for after.Often ~$150–$250 pp; group total TBD🔴 To book
Late EveningLow-key NYE back at resortAvoid overcommitting after ocean activity.Optional🟡 Proposed

Why this works: Manta ray night snorkel is one of the Big Island’s signature experiences and a strong holiday-week anchor. NYE makes it memorable, but it must be booked early.

Operator shortlist:

  • The Manta & Snorkel Co. — small-group style; verify age/swimming requirements.
  • Kona Snorkel Trips — generally well-regarded small-group option; verify holiday availability.
  • Sea Quest / Fair Wind / other Keauhou operators as backup depending group size and kids’ comfort.

Booking notes: Confirm minimum age, swimming ability requirements, wetsuit availability, cancellation policy, and whether observers/non-snorkelers can ride along.

Backup if not all kids want to snorkel: Split group: snorkel subgroup + resort NYE dinner/pool subgroup.

Friday, Jan 1 — Kohala Adventure or Recovery Day

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
MorningOption A: Kohala Waterfalls / Zipline adventureDepending operator, expect ~35–60 min drive from Hilton plus tour duration. Confirm meeting point, ages, weights.Often ~$200–$300+ pp; group total TBD🔴 To book / Ryan decision
MiddayWaimea lunch if doing KohalaWaimea is a good upcountry lunch stop.~$100–$250 family🟡 Proposed
AfternoonPool / resort recoveryNecessary after NYE + adventure.Included🟡 Proposed
EveningEasy dinner near resortKeep close: Waikoloa/Mauna Lani area.~$150–$350 family🟡 Proposed

Jan 1 Decision Point

OptionBest ForTradeoff
Kohala Waterfalls + ZiplineAdventure-focused kids/adults; memorable group activityCould be too much after NYE manta night; age/weight restrictions may split group
Resort + beach recovery dayLower stress; better for mixed-energy groupLess distinctive; may feel like a missed Big Island opportunity
Waimea + scenic North Kohala driveNice middle ground, less intenseMore driving than resort day; less “wow” for kids

Recommended default: Book Kohala only if the group is genuinely excited and the operator confirms all kids meet requirements. Otherwise make Jan 1 a recovery day and protect Jan 2 dinner.

Saturday, Jan 2 — Checkout + Departure / Final Meal

TimePlanLogisticsCost EstimateBooking Status
MorningPack, breakfast, final swim if timeHilton checkout 11:00 AM. Confirm late checkout or luggage storage if flights depart later.Incidentals🟡 Proposed
MiddayDepart for KOA or flexible final beach/lunchHilton → KOA ~25–35 min. Build buffer for rental car return and holiday airport traffic.TBD⚪ Flight info needed
If late flightNapua lunch/dinner or Mauna Lani / Waikoloa final mealOnly if flight timing supports it.~$200–$500 family🟡 Proposed

Important: Jan 2 is currently listed as trip end / checkout. Do not schedule a fixed dinner unless flights are late enough or there is post-checkout lodging/late departure clarity.

Family Fit Check

AreaAssessmentRisk / Mitigation
Overall pacingGood if only 2–3 anchor excursions are keptAvoid adding more major activities beyond Volcanoes, Manta, and maybe Kohala
Rest/pool timeStrong; resort afternoons are built inProtect afternoon rest before dinners/night snorkel
Meal timingTarget 5:30–6:30 PM dinnersAvoid late dinners after long-drive days
Heat/sunBeaches and resort days need sunscreen/hydrationUse morning beach windows; afternoon pool/rest
Kid suitabilityHilton, beaches, Kahaluʻu, and manta can work wellManta and zipline require comfort/age/weight checks
Highest fatigue dayVolcanoes National ParkKeep next morning slow and dinner easy
Night activity riskManta snorkel + drive backBring warm clothes; assign drivers; do not plan late NYE dinner after

Activity-Specific Kid Notes

ActivityFitWatch-Out

Volcanoes National ParkGood for all ages if pacedLong car day; rain/cooler weather possible

Manta Ray Night SnorkelPotentially excellent / memorableNight ocean comfort, swimming ability, minimum ages
Kohala zipline/waterfallsPotentially great for older kidsAge/weight/fitness rules; too much after NYE for some

Luxury / Experience Quality Check

CategoryAssessment
Hotel positioningHilton Waikoloa is not the most intimate luxury property, but it is very practical for a multi-family kid trip. The resort infrastructure is the luxury here: easy activities, pools, lagoon, space, and flexibility.
Room qualityResort View rooms are solid, and confirmed connecting rooms are valuable. If upgrades become available, prioritize location/convenience over view.
Worth splurgingManta Ray Night Snorkel with a smaller, higher-quality operator; one polished dinner at Manta/CanoeHouse/Napua; possibly a private/semi-private group excursion if headcount justifies it.
Skip / avoidOverstuffing the schedule; late-night Kona dinners after long days; generic large-boat tours if a small-group manta option is available; driving far for mediocre food.
Private transferNot necessary if renting cars. For a parents-only dinner with drinks, consider private car/driver or taxi arrangement rather than night driving.
Concierge leverageUse Hilton concierge for local confirmations, room-location requests, and backup dining; use restaurant direct/online booking for priority reservations.
